Tobacco sales from vending machines ban

THE sale of cigarettes from vending machines in Carrickfergus will be illegal after a ban comes into force next week.

The legislation is being introduced across Northern Ireland on March 1 to tackle the number of underage smokers that exist.

In 2010 a survey found that in the province, 14 percent of smokers were aged 11-16 years. The ban will bring Northern Ireland into line with England and Wales, with Scotland set to introduce similar legislation shortly.

With an estimated 15 tobacco vending machines remaining in the Borough, the Council’s Environmental Health staff will examine numbers during visits to check compliance with the Smoking (NI) Order 2006.

The local government authority’s Tobacco Control Officer will also be visiting appropriate premises to advise them of the change in law, with compliance visits to be carried out after the ban is introduced.

Facial Recognition meets the Vending Machine!

A new vending machine in Japan uses facial recognition technology to ‘recommend’ drinks to customers. The machine uses sensors to analyse the face of the customer, then makes suggestions based on age and gender.
A woman in her 20s will be recommended a tea drink or a minimally sweeter product, since market research has shown they like these better.

The machines have been developed by JR East Water Business Co, a subsidiary of East Japan Railway Company. It’s been tested in one Tokyo train station so far; but there are plans to roll it out to others imminently. Sales have initially been higher than those of other machines.

How to: Save money on coffee facilities and keep staff happy

With the U.K. economy on a virtual plateau, and the Government spending cuts beginning to take effect in the public sector. Private businesses are undertaking major cost cutting exercises and improving efficiencies in a bid to whether the financial storm.

Facilities and office managers have difficulty striking a balance between providing adequate coffee facilities for staff and customers, on ashrinking budget, whilst keeping an eye on corporate social responsibility and ecological issues.

Many facilities management companies outsource refreshment provision to specialist vending companies to provide the vending machines and maintenance on their behalf. As a result a business may not be receiving the most appropriate facilities for their needs, and the costs may be higher than if dealing with the vending companies direct.
Vending machines have come a long way in the past 50 years. It is now possible to serve a complete range of meals from a virtual restaurant. These machines are the ideal canteen replacement offering a quick, convenient, 24 hour service, without the need for additional catering staff; potentially saving businesses up to 90% of their catering budget without compromising on facilities.

Modern coffee machines are more energy efficient than traditional kettles and water boilers and in most cases serve beverages in under 30 seconds. The best modern coffee machines will serve a range of coffee shop favourite drinks such as Cappuccino, Latte and Espresso; the ingredients of which come from sustainable and even Rainforest Alliance Certified sources.

By using specialist companies to provide bespoke facilities, managers can ensure a hassle-free provision, serving the range of high quality coffee shop style refreshments staff and customers have come to expect.

Douwe Egberts and vending operators provide a cost effective alternative to high street coffee.

Recent online posts by, Paul Freeman, Marketing Director at Douwe Egberts Coffee Systems UK, explain how vending operators throughout the country have had significant successes in comparison to high street chains in the hot drinks market.

Mr Freeman, in an article for Vending International goes on to discuss how vending operators like LTT Vending for example demanded better machines and better quality products for their clients.  Vended coffee is no longer a simple convenience solution; clients like @BupaUK and @SussexUni ensure that their clients have the best solution available.

LTT Vending is in the enviable position of working with a range of machine manufacturers and as a consequence is able to provide bespoke solutions depending on the requirements of the client and their customer base.  University of Leeds employ the Giraffe machine, affectionately called the ‘quid with a lid’ which serves 12oz premium quality drinks at a fraction of the cost of High Street rivals, the end result is students spend more time on campus.

Edward Selka, Managing Director, at LTT Vending believes passionately that employing quality products is the best way of differentiating from the crowd and the only way of ensuring customer retention.  Happy customers mean happy clients, LTT Vending prides itself on ‘being the customer’s choice’.
